New Macs Around the Corner

1 #

Music to my ears! Looks like we are going to be getting a look at new iMacs and keyboards on August 7th. You know I will be scouring the web for a vodcast and as soon as I got one I will of course link it up. Engadget has some details, but as usual Apple is pretty lean with details and we will all have to wait and see what is unveiled.

Apple gathering press for Mac event next week:

Looks like those rumors about new Macs on the 7th were true — we were just invited to an Apple “product presentation for Mac” at Apple Town Hall in Cupertino next week. The event gets started on the morning of August 7th, and while we weren’t promised an appearance by El Jobso, Apple was, shockingly enough, very open and clear about the fact that this is going to be a press gathering for Mac products (and Mac products only — so stash away those iPhone hopes, fears, and rumors until next Wednesday).

THis week is just full of great news! I don’t think I have been able to blog about so much cool stuff in such a little amount of time ever. Whoohooo!

Halo 3 and Online Co-Op

1 #

ok, perhaps I am getting a bit to excited over here, but Halo is one of my all time favorite first-person-shooters. I love the cooperative mode that has been featured in both 1 and 2 and now we are hearing of the ability to play online co-op! PolyVector and I have been waiting for this, the only problem is, it can be pretty much guaranteed it will only be one player to a box. Which blows for us, since we play split screen, and I am not about to grab another Xbox 360. I think i will cross my fingers anyways and hope that they will allow at least two players a box. Bungie, make my dreams come true!

Edit: [insert string of frantic cussing and words like "awesome"]

Bungie has confirmed my dreams and I think I am gonna mess my pants!

The Tru7h About Co-Op in Halo 3

It’s time for us to sack up and tell you what’s what regarding online co-op.

That is correct – up to four player co-op in Campaign mode on Xbox Live or System Link.

Split-screen co-op is as ever, limited to two players per screen – but they can if they wish join two other friends online or via System Link.

For fictional reasons, we decided to avoid Halo’s slightly surreal compromise of two identical Master Chiefs and rather, use this opportunity to expand the Halo universe just a little bit. Player one will control the Master Chief, player two will control the Arbiter and players three and four will get the chance to control two brand new Elite characters.

Every player will have identical abilities – only their appearance and weapon starts are different (Elites will start with Carbines versus Battle Rifles for example, depending on the mission). So there you have it. Mystery solved. Internet dramas ended. Four player online co-op it is. And a special thanks to the test, engineering, production and design teams who worked incredibly hard to make this feature happen.

Now if we only knew anyone with an Xbox 360…

Futurama is Coming Back

0 #

Today is turning up to be quite interesting. Some good news coming down the tubes, otherwise known as the internet. Futurama is gonna be back starting this November, and on the 27th to be exact!

On A Bender: Futurama Back in November as a Feature-Length HD DVD:

Cult cartoon Futurama is coming back later this year as a full-length film. The movie, Bender’s Big Score, will be available to buy on November 27 as a high-definition DVD, and will be followed by three other feature-length movies. Each movie will, however, be divided into four separate episodes and will be aired on TV.

Comedy Central will be showing the 16 episodes. Not much is known about them, apart from a few juicy tidbits from Bender’s Big Score. Apparently it involves nudist aliens and the secret of time travel ñ- which apparently has something to do with Fry’s buttock. [TV Squad via Slashdot]

Thanks Gizmodo! Today you have given me something to live for.

Laser Printers May Be as Harmful as Cigarettes

4 #

Here’s a fun little tid bit I found today in my RSS reader. And why would I think it is important to anyone who reads this blog? Well, not only do PolyVector and I use a laser printer, but so does MegaNice9, Parsnipper and Sally. So dear family, just thought I would pass this along to you. Enjoy!

Great News: Laser Printers May Be as Harmful as Cigarettes:
deathprinter.jpg

Bad news, office drones: that laser printer sitting in your cubicle might be doing some serious damage to your health. It turns out that one third of all laser printers emit tiny particles of toner that, when inhaled, have similar effects as second-hand smoke. Awesome!

The printers are more dangerous when they’re used a lot, especially for graphic and photo heavy prints that require a lot of toner. In an open office setting, tests revealed that particle levels in the air increased five-fold during the working day due to printer use. That’s such fun news, isn’t it? And here you were eating salads, jogging, and not smoking, and it’s going to be your laser printer that does you in. Life sure is hilarious sometimes. [BBC]

Server Fixin’s

2 #

Well after a long search for the source of the server problems I think we’ve narrowed it down to a battered mysql server. Most of the CMS’s we run on our various sites don’t have an option to use a “persistent connection” to the database which meant that every page-view on every site was establishing a new connection. Since we get millions of page-views a month, our poor little server was having a heart-attack… I modified a few files in Joomla, MODx , and our own code to utilize persistent connections and so-far-so-good… We should know by tomorrow if we’ve solved the problem and can stick w/ our current server for a while longer. :)
