The History of Metroid

Since today I seem to have gone on a Metroid kick I thought I would go ahead and educate. While reading through more RSS goodness (I am sure you noticed I do this a lot) an interesting (but long) read caught my attention. Lucas DeWoody of Advanced Media Network’s Wii section, has put together a four page article concerning the history of Metroid from its plotting at Nintendo to all five of the currently available games.

The Metroid franchise is obviously one of the most cherished franchises in gaming, both from the perspective of hardcore Nintendo fans and the media alike, with Super Metroid even topping “greatest of all time” charts in both online and print media. Though even with all its many accolades, the Metroid franchises is also one of the biggest tough luck cases in gaming both past and present, proving the old adage of almost always being in the right place and the wrong time. Though acclaimed by many, the franchise has rarely managed to achieve mass-market success, even when it goes above and beyond anything the competition can muster. Part of this can be blamed on circumstance, and part can be blamed on the franchise’s publisher Nintendo, but either way, Metroid has suffered through everything from overshadowed launches and near extinction all while bringing us some of the most cherished moments in all of gaming. Let’s take a detailed look back in time at the birth and evolution of this amazing series that has done everything from rewrite the book on open-ended platformer design, to establish a new identity for strong female stars in a leading role.

This is definitely a good read for new and old Metroid fans.

Metroid Prime 3 is Finally Ours

Complete insanity! It took us till today to get a copy of Metroid Prime 3 here locally. And no I don’t mean they have been sold out. They just never stocked the game until this morning. That’s two days after official release. I find it funny that movies are stocked on the day of release but video games are not. I guess gaming isn’t one of the top pass times here in Flagstaff. Oh well, we finally have our copy. I have been avoiding reading any reviews and walk throughs of the game so not to have it spoiled. I do of course read through headlines which state that game is quite amazing.

September 5th’s Apple Event

Goodness, we just had the Special Apple Event this month about the new iMacs, keyboards, iLife, and iWork. Looks like we are getting another press get together. And what does it seem is on the agenda? Why the iPod of course! So for those looking at new colored video iPods, or an even smaller iPod Nano, this might just be your ticket.

Well the rumors have been floating around for a few days, and now we’ve gotten official word — in the form of the invite you see above — that Apple will be holding a “special event” on September 5th. Let the speculationbegin!

Lego-like Jobs and Woz Play Set Offered

I don’t know if anyone who reads Atomac cares about Cult of Mac or Ars Technica, but I can’t pass up showing off a Lego set that I would probably own if I didn’t have some sort of self control….or lack of room. Your choice.

There are many measures of Apple fandom. Some people hoard old machines and keep them in pristine running condition. Others get tattoos and unfortunate haircuts.

And then there are those who drop cash on limited-edition lego replicas of Steve Jobs and Woz. No, I’m not making this up. According to Ars Technica, the sets go on sale tomorrow at 9 p.m. Eastern. You can be one of the few, the proud, the Mac proud.

Apple, Market Share, and the PC Wars

Like every morning when I first wake up I go sit at my computer and go through my RSS feeds. I guess this is the equivalent to those who run outside and grab their paper to have with their coffee. Although I am such a junkie I can’t wait for my coffee to finish brewing (or sometimes even brew it at all). I stumbled across an interesting article about Acer buying up Gateway for an insanely cheap price and it continued to talk about market share versus profit and how to really tell if a company is doing well. And if you know me, then you of coursed guessed already that this does have to do with Apple as well. Anywho, here’s a snippet and a link:

Surprise, surprise: It’s Apple that’s winning the ‘PC Wars’ after all

“Well… another one of those once-indomitable foes has bitten the dust. Gateway has been sold to Acer for a paltry $710 million (that’s how low Gateway had sunk; that price was actually seen as a huge premium by shareholders, who raised the stock 50% today. Apple, by the way, has a market cap of $115 billion). Despite throwing every strategy he could think of to fix Gateway’s problems–including selling the company to eMachines–PC industry pioneer Ted Waitt couldn’t figure out the conundrum of selling a highly-complex product that carries the margins of a banana,” Peter Burrows blogs for BusinessWeek.

“To me, it’s a powerful reminder of the wisdom of Jobs’ approach to business–which values profits over growth, and which values market share mostly as a trailing indicator of success rather than a primary peg of a strategy,” Burrows writes. “Gateway is far from the only proof point that Jobs was right. Back in the day, Apple’s main tormentors also included IBM, Dell, Packard-Bell, HP and Compaq. Now look. IBM is out of the business. Dell is struggling mightily. Gateway announced, in conjunction with the Acer deal, that it would buy Packard-Bell. Compaq was bought by HP…”"

Burrows writes, “While it’s hard to argue with Apple’s success, that old obsession with market share dies hard. While Lenovo clearly has the most to lose from Acer’s move, many articles mentioned that the Gateway acquisition would vault Acer well ahead of Apple, as well. Who knows, maybe that contributed to the 2.25% drop in Apple shares [yesterday]. If so, it’s a buying opportunity.”

If you get a chance read through the full article and check out the comments on MacDailyNews. They are entertaining.

“Zune” Spelled Backwards

I thought I would share this with our adoring fans. It gave PolyVector and me a laugh, especially since “they” cheated. The E is upside down. Either way, funny stuff.

Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or Boot Camp

A little bit ago I was talking about the possibility of PolyVector and myself switching to VMWare Fusion instead of sticking with Parallels Desktop. After some extensive testing we found out a few interesting things. VMWare Fusion was working fine on my Mac until I started getting into network shares. PolyVector had an awful time working with VMWare on his MacBook. It would continuously slow down and freeze during every start of the virtual machine. So after some careful consideration we have decided on the following setups for each, PolyVector will continue to use Parallels (we bought it so why not continue to use it), and I will be using Boot Camp for the added bonus of having a completely native install of Windows for testing. The only downside of my own setup is that I can only have one copy of WIndows installed at a time. Hopefully the finally version o Boot Camp will allow for more than one copy of WIndows installed on a single hard drive at a time.

Atomac is Growing Up

PolyVector was talking to me the other day about how the Atomac’s theme was getting on his nerves. I admit that its charm has deteriorated the more I work on the site. While neither of us are designers that meant I had to go out looking for a tolerable theme for us to use. This is a harder task than one might think, so much junk out there, especially in the world of WordPress. After looking at my 100th whatever theme I finally decided Atomac needed to grow up and have a much more minimal look. I finally stumbled upon Pop Blue 3 Columns at Blog Oh Blog. Once I got it setup PolyVector was content and I was feeling much more at home with our new look.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to express those. In the event anything is out of place or not working we would like to hear about those as well.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

The only good thing about waking up at 5 AM is the fact that we will be the first at the store to pick up our copy of Metroid Prime 3 today. After all the hard work that has been going on the past week I think we deserve a little game time. This will probably just prepare us for Halo 3 next month as well. After watching all the videos available on the Wii Metroid channel it really seems they are trying to take Metroid towards a more Halo type game play. Of course only really being able to play through will tell us for sure if this was what they were going for. Don’t expect to see much of us for at least the next thee days as we play through. Perhaps afterwards I’ll have a review.

Update: Well, we went to both Target and Wal-Mart this morning and neither of them were carrying Metroid Prime 3. We even asked the Game clerk…So we are stuck without Medtroid till one of the two stores decides to carry it. The only other game place around here is a Game Stop that is currently closed due to some weird mall remodeling. This town was not meant for the tech/gaming nerd.
