New Dedicated Server

Last night we went ahead and purchased a new dedicated server. While we think we did get everything fixed up on our current one, after looking at all the stats we realized that we needed more bandwidth and a hardware upgrade. The server should be setup hopefully by Monday night and we will then move one site over a t a time to ensure everything is setup properly and we don’t need to do any additional tweaking.

So here is what we’re looking at. Our current server is unmanaged, meaning there is no service monitoring, no uptime monitoring, no updates on hardware or software. PolyVector and myself are completely responsible for everything on the server. We have been doing ok seeing as this was our first dedicated server. It’s specs are:

Intel Celeron 2.53 GHz
512 MB RAM
60 GB Hard Drive
Fedora Core 4
Plesk Control Panel
400 GB Monthly Transfer
10 Mbps Line

Our new server has some vast improvements. The new server is partially managed, meaning that services are monitored, uptime is monitored and we get hardware and software updates. This is going to be extremely useful since PolyVector and I haven’t exactly mastered installing MySQL,PHP and OS updates via a SSH client just yet. So this ensures better server stability especially since we always seem to be asleep when the server goes down. The new specs are:

Intel P4 2.8 GHz
2 GB DDR RAM
120 GB Hard Drive
CentOS
Plesk Control Panel
2 TB Monthly Transfer
100 Mbps Line

Atomac is going to be the first site to move over so as soon as the server is ready for us we will get an article up letting you guys know about any down time.

  • The monitoring sounds like the best upgrade. I’m sure that the extra capacity will help also. Hope that you have less down time. By the way, you have got some cute ‘mutes’.

  • It’s great that you have enough interest in your sites to require more bandwidth. Congrats!
