I decided to try and do something semi-productive tonight and I successfully got Gravatars working with our current WordPress theme. So here’s what this is all about:
What is a gravatar?
A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an 80×80 pixel avatar image that follows you from weblog to weblog appearing beside your name when you comment on gravatar enabled sites. Avatars help identify your posts on web forums, so why not on weblogs?
Now that these things are biult in what can you? Well if you sign up for a Gravatar account and use the same email when leaving a comment here on Atomac your nifty avatar will show up right next to it. I always wanted avatars for my comments here on Atomac but I never wanted to allow accounts beyond PolyVector’s and my own. So for those of you who already use Gravatars, excellent! For those who don’t, hope you tinker with it, it is useful on other sites besides here.
If you would like to incorporate Gravatars into your site, here is the code snipet I used: http://pastebin.ca/743979 I placed it right before the comment_text() call in comments.php when using WordPress.
