Looping all the While

This is a post in my series “Road to Xcode.” I am currently reading Programming in Objective-C 2.0 by Stephen Kochan.

5. Program Looping

I’ve finally busted into learning different kinds of loops. I am trying to master for, while, and do statements. Going through this section of the book has been extremely slow going since my math skills are embarrassingly more than rusty. It might come to me snagging some books to refresh my memory. This chapter didn’t seem to cover everything as the next chapter deals with making decisions (which is the actual title of chapter 6). I think to get a complete understanding and practical use of loops I need to get into if statements as well.

I was kind of bummed at this part of the book because it took me out of using classes and methods. I do feel like I have a decent understanding of creating and uses my own classes and methods, but I like to make sure I can bring each concept together. Hopefully the next chapter will bring me back to working in that mind set. Luckily I have saved my previous calculator app to go over in the event I feel like I am getting rusty.

iPhone Autocrorrection Petition Outcome

Back in September I urged everyone to sign a petition to get an option to turn off the autoorrection on the Apple iPhone. I thought it would only be fair to talk about the outcome of that petition really quickly.

Turns out Apple has listened to us! And the next iPhone firmware update (2.2) will have the option to turn off the autocorrect that has caused so many of us to type the absolute wrong things to friends and family, and has even made blog posting a total nightmare.

So I wanted to say thanks to everyone who signed the petition and of course to Apple for actually adding in the option.

Today’s Letter is “P” for Poverty

It’s funny when people think of poverty they think of it more as a disease that needs to be cured. A regions resources and economy largely dictate what “wealth” is to people living there. In order to understand poverty you need to understand the people’s problems in the region and how they can use the resources available to them to pull them out. Every person can make a difference locally and aboard and thinking small is just the beginning.

Part of today’s goal is to make people aware of poverty. It’s amazing how blind you can become to the problems of even your community, never mind the rest of the world. Perhaps you are busy with work, school, or a family. There are things you can still do that will make a difference, and all you have to do is start small.

For example, in your community support local store and farmers markets. Not only is it better for the environment it is better for your local economy. Jobs can stay competitive for your area and allow people who might not have means of traveling out of the city. Be sure to participate in local elections and vote on propositions and leaders. If you don’t have time to go out to the polls, register as an absentee (mail) voter.

Perhaps you do want to think more globally, there are plenty of organizations that can help you reach this goal. Instead of just donating to charities you could support microlenders like Kiva.org. There are many other ways to donate and participate monitarily on BlogActionDay.org.

This month I have been participating in a book club run by a good friend. The book was chosen to go with the topic of this years Blog Action Day. We are Out of Poverty by Paul Polak. The book argues against some of the conventional ways organizations and governments have gone about relieving the world of poverty and how we should start thinking about it in business terms. I am not going to argue the points here, but if you are interested, think about joining us. I think Omara (MegaNice9) summed it up best in her BAD comic.

If reading isn’t your thing, but you have an audience, spread the word! Blog Action Day is just the beginning, now that you have the idea, run with it!

Joost Finally Goes Live (Again)

Joost started off as an invite only internet TV streaming application. Last October it dropped the invite only status and allowed users to sign up and start using a desktop application to stream TV channels with commercials in a p2p (peer to peer) fashion. After a few months Joost closed it’s doors and began to make the transition to web based streaming (similar to hulu), but required its own browser plugin beyond the normal flash plugin most users are accustomed to. Earlier today they finally opened their doors again to be fully web based without the need for a fancy browser plugin.

I am really glad to see more and more TV streaming interent sites and applications, but I think Joost might be late to the party. Hulu provides much better quality video. I think we might end up seeing which service is better but the ease of use and the over all available content. Joost was first when bringing streaming TV to the users desktop, but can they catch up other sites that have brought it even further?
