Cuban Style

Shot prepared Cuban style, with sugar layered on top of tamped coffee
I’m always willing to give different styles of coffee preparation a go, this time around I pulled a shot Cuban style.
Cuban style espresso is pretty easy to do. Start your espresso shot as normal, but before locking in the portafilter, after tamping the coffee add a layer of sugar. Pull!
I’m not a huge fan of sugar in coffee without some kind of milk or cream. Brewing the coffee with the sugar is kind of an interesting experience. It adds a sweetness that you’d expect, but it isn’t anything I’d do again. I’d keep the sugar layer to 1/2 tsp. Even in a double, this was pretty sweet. I was looking for a more caramelized taste since the sugar is up against the dispersion screen. Sadly it wasn’t the case. Was nice to try though.
Hmmm I would probably like something like that since I haven’t gotten used to no sugar in my coffee yet. Plus I like sweet stuff. :D Would you try it again maybe with less sugar? And was it a straight shot that you tried or did you go Americano or anything? Do you think that would make a difference at all?
I wouldn’t have it again personally. And I drank it straight, that’s the way you’re supposed to have it. I don’t think it would have been any better as an americano, Maybe a macchiato.
