Sweet Maria's Espresso Workshop #10: Espresso Profundo, Vienna Roast
After all the light roasting I’ve done in the past month and a half it is so nice to hit the dark stuff again. Sweet Maria’s Espresso Workshop #10 is a great blend to kick off our next espresso experiment. I’ve decided to go with all blends this time around. I have one or two for light roasting but most are meant for the Full City+ to Vienna range.
Before I talk about blends experiment I should talk a bit about the Espresso Profundo blend. Right off it was a welcome change from the single origins we’ve been having. This coffee pulled like pudding. Thick and smooth. The dominant notes are bittersweet chocolate with a mix of berries. The acidity is pretty much non-existant at the Vienna stage of roasting. The after taste lasts a pretty long time, but is pleasant, almost a little smokey. I’ve heard at lighter roasts this blend can pick up tropical flavors like pineapple. Since I just got done with lighter roasts and needed a break from all teh acidity I didn’t get to try this blend any lighter.
Now, this next experiment regarding blends really is to see how much flavor can get packed into a cup. I’ve preferred single origin espressos, but now that I’ve gotten pretty used to my lever machine it’s time to try everything all over again. I’m not exactly singling out darker roasts, but probably will be trying all the blends at the darker end of the spectrum. I’ve heard that a lever machine layers flavors better in an espresso shot, rather than a pump machines tendency to mix notes throughout. I’m very curious to see this hold true.
