Happy New Year

Wow, sometimes I can’t believe how fast time passes in my world. Happy New Year to everyone who is celebrating their new year on this day. I hope 2008 finds everyone well. We spent our evening experimenting. And no not that way. We got the urge to make Horchata. And as a fall back we made some oatmeal cookies from semi-scratch. I gotta say for our very first time making horchata it wasn’t too bad.

And indeed that would be our lovely Horchata. The recipe was actually modified for our impatience and wanting it exactly at midnight. You are actually supposed to soak the rice and we ended up boiling it. It was a little thinner than egg nog (ick) and this is supposed to be a much more milky drink. So we went wrong somewhere. Probably the boiling. it turned the rice cinnamon mixture into this weird gelatin kind of. It was drinkable though. The oatmeal cookies on the other hand were fantastic! We also had to modify the recipe. We didn’t have baking soda or flour, so we just substituted Bisquick. It worked really well actually.

Anywho, our New Years was very relaxing. Willow is still on vacation in New Mexico and we just sat around eating our cookies, drinking our Horchata and watching The Kingdom and Frida. Off I go for now, my Grammy has just called from California to wish me a Happy New Year and tell me about her day. Adieu!

  • Sally, if you create a tasty Horchata recipe, please share it with us! Things to note that we have found: You should definitely add almonds and soaking the rice is super important, don’t take the lazy route and boil the rice. It makes it very gelatinous and almost egg nog like. Good luck with your Horchata!

  • Parsnipper ordered a huge Horchata at Sombrero’s yesterday. It was good, but nothing compared to the Horchata at El Torito’s! I think I may join you in experimenting with a homemade version. It’s worth a try anyway. Cheers!
