Home Made Bottomless Portafilter
by Skunkie

Yesterday I dumped the task upon my boy friend to modify my La Pavoni Europiccola’s 49mm portafilter to be bottomless. I could make tons of excuses on why I didn’t do it myself, but lets face it, he’s just way better with tools than I am. The process is fairly simple and so I managed to take shots of each step along the way.
Now before anyone goes off on how easy this would have been with a hole saw or anything else, keep in mind we live in an apartment and don’t have a garage or storage for extra tools. We ended up using a drill and a dremel for the entire process, and it worked quite well, granted it did take us all day to finish up.
I am extremely happy with the results and I plan on taking a video of my first bottomless shot in the morning. I asked for PolyVector to chop my portafilter so I can easily diagnose the problems I am having extracting the perfect shot with my La Pavoni. Plus, it also looks extremely cool.

Cool!
Congratulations! :D
That’s crazy. Looks like it came out nicely. :D Can’t wait to hear (and see) how the shots come out and how well the npf works.
I’m hoping we cut it right. I’ve heard stories of people who have it running down the handle and all over them.
Thanks, Pawel! I don’t think I ever said how much I did appreciate you offering me your bottomless portafilter at a reduced price.
