If It Isn’t One Thing…

For those of you keen on following news over on Punk Labs we have been dealing with RocketDock.com’s server downtime. I am so disapointed in our managed server company’s support on this one. We purchased the new server last month to take the full load of RocketDock.com. Upon switching everything over we noticed a huge onslaught of spam emails going to PolyVector’s personal email (which he also happens to use for business related stuff). We have searched high and low for the problem on our server. The odd thing is no one else who we host email for has had trouble with this spam occurrence (trust me, you would know what I am talking about if it happened to you). Then the unthinkable happens and our server company has told us the IP for that particular server running RocketDock.com has been blocked (who has blocked it, we don’t know, we are assuming the company’s ISP).

Now we are not server experts…I would call myself a complete novice, PolyVector knows the file system structure and how to work with settings files (and more I am sure). But when it comes down to this weird spam issue our hosting company has been….well…lets just say support is non-existant. Why on earth are we paying for a managed server when we aren’t getting help managing it. Our biggest fear was the new server came with a nice spam bot or botnet or some kind of fun virus sending out email. It isn’t unheard of and issues like this do occur. In fact our last dedicated server company had to take down quite a few servers before we moved to fix a virus that did much the same thing.

Anywho, besides all this going on our phone has decided to sop working. We have been having issues with Skype on and off for a little over a year now. I had recently given up and forwarded our Skype number to our iPhone so we can still get calls while we debate on switching everyone/thing over to using solely the iPhone number. but now the forwarding doesn’t even work and we have been getting calls from friends where we can’t hear anything (not even a crackle) on their side. I am still not certain if they can hear me. So if you call our normal number you will get frustrated voicemail message from me saying to call the iPhone.

It sounds like no matter how sophisticated technology is, it still has a long way to go. If I can help w/testing phone lines or anything, let me know.

Geez, that sounds like a pain … just one thing after another. I use GlobeDomain for my hosting company and had some problems with my site for about 2 weeks. Turns out, the servers crashed but I didn’t hear about this until the 4th day and that was only when I emailed them. I’m thinking about switching. What do you guys suggest? It’s messed up about your support thing [or lack thereof rather]. Good luck with getting the RocketDock back up.

We’ve gone through so much shared hosting. We had pretty decent luck with Site5 and Servage. Site5 has the best deal and Servage has the best support. There are plenty of people who swear by DreamHost as well. We have never tried them, so can’t say if they have quality service. Good luck!

This must be so incredibly aggravating! I will be thinking positive thoughts for you as you try to sort out this problem and get things humming again.

After trying again with our server’s hosting company’s support…they have replied with the most helpful response yet…

“way to busy and to be honest it’s your job to manage the software”

Thank you annon tech guy…you have been very helpful in this stressful situation for which we are paying you $100 a month for your services….might I add “managed services.”

We are searching for a new dedicated hosting company right now. Enough is enough.

And that was the fourth or fifth dismissive response in which that asshole CLOSED the support ticket and didn’t answer a single question… DAYS into this problem and we don’t even know the nature of it… The best part is when you read their website about how they manage everything for you and have professional technicians ready to sort out any problems you have… We can’t even ping our server and they don’t care.

Edit: Oh yeah, Skunkie left out the part where he recommended we hire a company to MANAGE OUR SERVER… This was a message from “managedservices”, an employee of “ManageMyBox”, a subdivision of “ManageMyServices”… a company that provides managed hosting…. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm?

WOW….that is ridiculous. Obviously it’s the better move to search for a new dedicated server. I’m sorry that hosting service is being so lame. And how rude too. Geeze. Well I hope you guys find a better dedicated server and everything gets up and running soon. I wonder if there’s a manager of managed services that you can talk to… though I’m guessing things don’t run like a normal business on the tech end of things…it’s not like you can go to the place and make a scene…otherwise I would totally offer my mom to do that for you…she’s awesome at making a scene when she gets bad service.
