At around 8am this morning PolyVector and I had one of the biggest scares ever. Prancer had a grand mal seizure. Apparently he has been having very small seizures that we thought were him cramping up. I feel so stupid for not putting these two things together for so long. Prancer back in 2002 had an extremely terrible car accident which resulted in half of his cranium being smashed. The doctors did warn my mom that he would probably end up with seizures or total blindness. This definitely is going to change the way we take care of him, including his diet and exercise. This coming Tuesday we are making the long drive down to California to finish our move and I hope everything goes well.

I know this may be a long shot, but if anyone knows or can recommend anything concerning epilepsy in dogs please leave us a comment. You better believe we are doing all the research we can online and as soon as the move is complete will be consulting a vet.

And I just want to say that seeing Prancer go into a full grand mal seizure is something I would never want to have happen to anyone else’s pets. He is doing well right now and comfortably relaxing in his bed. We have drawn all the shades and keeping a very calm atmosphere.

The accident was a long time ago, but after doing some research it can take years before epilepsy can kick in. There has been a lot of helpful information online so far. He is doing well right now and we have learned that there is medication that could suppress future seizures. We will be looking into that further after the move.

Poor Pranie! I would have never guessed that those episodes he was having were seizures. He will be in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear Prancer had a seizure. I had a friend who had petite mal seizures, and she would go into a trance for a minute or so once in a while. I don’t know anything about canine seizures, but I’ll see what I can find on the subject. Please give Prannie a squeeze for me.

Wow.. That’s really scary. I would die if buster had a seizure. I wish there was some way I could help, unfortunately I know very little about seizures. I don’t even know the pain of losing a loved pet that was grown up with. I am really glad he is okay.

From what I know/remember, a Grand Mal seizure is a way of the brain resetting itself. Thats what electro shock therapy does, they shock your temples sending a surge into your brain, causing you to have that kind of seizure for several minutes.

Did the Vets say anything about clots in your pup’s brain or aneurisms?

Did the CT of the pup’s brain seem weird?

I watch a lot of doctor shows (ie. House, ER, Scrubs) Sorry.

Even though Humans and Dogs (I don’t say animals because, heck, aren’t humans animals too?) are different, we’re basically walking bio sacks.

Dankh, I felt so helpless watching him go through it. it only lasted about 4-5 seconds. Felt like an eternity though. I guess that is a pretty “mild” grand mal seizure. They can last up to 5 minutes or more and continue in intervals for hours, but generally last about 1 minute . Apparently there isn’t much a vet can do and it is common for a vet to even have you call back when the seizures are finished. And an emergency is only declared if it is multiple seizures and the dog does not regain conscienceless in between.

We lost our little Sammy in September (you can find the article by searching for “In Loving Memory”) so we have been really on edge lately.

Teslanaut, unfortunately right now I cannot take Prancer to the vet to get massive testing. We are currently in the middle of a huge move. You better believe it is one of the first things we will be doing when get down to California. I have some information from 2002 (when his accident occurred), but I don’t know how to read the numbers. This will be something I will also bring up at the vet.

    Sorry to hear this.

My dog also has seisures about once a month, it is not fun to see.

I’m not sure if it caused by epilepsy though…
