Yet Another iMac Down for the Count

6 #

I dunno what is going on this month, it must be the heat. Turns out last night MegaNice9’s iMac G5 (iSight) turned itself off as she was preparing for bed and was unable to turn it back on. I have been searching for solutions she could try before having to schedule an appointment with an Apple Genius.

I told her for the next 24 hours let her iMac sit unplugged from all USB and power sources and see if it is just some kind of static build up. I know the solution sounds stupid, but I have had weirder things fix non-botting computers.

If anyone would like to chime in with some pearls of wisdom, we are all ears. I will be searching around the Macosphere. Apple’s troubleshooting page for PPC iMacs was no help.

Update: I made an appointment with the Apple Store in Fashion Valley (San Diego) for Thursday to get MegaNice9’s iMac checked out.

It’s a Sad Night for Macs

2 #

Tonight I was trying to help my best friend Willow troubleshoot her ailing iMac Core Duo (first generation Intel iMac). For quite awhile now she has been getting troublesome freezing and video anomalies (lines across her iSight’s video). Just to out rule software/user error I walked her through a backup (she already had a Time Capsule, but when it comes to important family pictures and personal writings you can never be too careful) and she continued with a complete reinstall of Leopard.

Unfortunately during the reinstall she emailing me with this horrid picture of a fuzzy colored scribbling iMac. It appears her GPU is going. At least that is my best educated guess. I know exactly how she feels as her Mac sits blankly on her desk tonight as she awaits for morning to call Apple to make an appointment to see a “Genius.”

I just wanted to say I feel for ya bean!

The Woes of a Caffeine Addict

6 #

Well, I had a few articles planned out for today but I have sort of been in a blur. Being a caffeine addict certainly has its drawbacks. While I can force myself to sit through the most boring of movies with a soda in hand, the effects of the sugar (or high fructose corn syrup….thanks US) combined with the caffeine, leaves me with a headache along with other symptoms of withdrawal when the addiction is not properly fed. So once again PolyVector and myself are trying to free ourselves from this vice. It renders us rather unproductive for a few days though. Along with this arduous task we are also trying to bring our hours back to a “normal” sleeping schedule. This is a mixture of doom, but not impossible. I decided to go ahead and write up this probably very incoherent post before I head to bed after depriving myself of both adequate caffeine and sleep. In short, coffee and tea make for a much better caffeine addiction. And even though I am writing this while we are in the transition period of non-soda drinking, it is a cycle we go through commonly. Be ready for another post of this type months from now. Off to bed I go, tomorrow should be a better day for posting.
